Deep Feelings Pt 1
By Jonathan Clingerman
‘Brown. My eyes are dark brown,’ he thought as if he was studying himself.
“But my eyes are the same,” he said.
Looking forward in the mirror with a small flashlight the noticed a dark black layer around the once light brown eyes he had growing up.
“I swear I had light brown eyes before,” he said to his mother. “Never dark brown, or even with like black around it. It shows, mom look.”
He put the flashlight on the side of his face to show he was telling the truth.
“Just stop!” His mother said. “You’re talking nonsense now.”
“I just feel they were light brown before I turned 15,” he sighs. “I remembered that's all. To be honest, I was just gonna ask if eyes just changed over time.
“Look,” his mother said. “I don't know. Maybe. But that's just weird to ask. I'm not an eye doctor, so I would not know. But they have always been dark brown, okay?
“Mom sorry for that.”
He always walked to College High. It wasn't far and there was a liquor store nearby. He had $20 to his name. He bought a drink and a candy bar, leaving him with $4 and some change. Poorer.
“Awwwww,” he said a block later, thinking about his friend Corey. “I usually don't forget to buy my friend a drink. With only two more blocks left before the front gates to his school, he felt an overwhelming feeling, best described as scared.
“Hey!” a girl yelled. “Are you going to the College High too!?”
He looked her way and nodded. She was across the street, but seconds later next to him. Within seconds she was next to him form all the way across the street.
“Hi. I'm ____,” she said her name but he didn't hear it.
He was embarrassed to ask. He didn't say much, but his name. Going past the front gates where he said sorry to Corey for the forgotten drink. Corey probably didn't hear, because he just laughed at a skateboarder falling. The girl he just met was standing there looking around, not doing much in response. She started talking to him. Corey went to help up the fallen skateboarder.
“Soo hey. I'm new to this city, and I'm a bit shy as well, but do you think you could show me around? I only have about 10 minutes to find all my classes. Sorry for bugging you too.”
“I don't mind,” he said. “Corey is probably gonna get some breakfast, to be honest. I got a snack already.”
Before heading toward her class, he said, “I'll see Corey in third period and after school later.”
The girl laughed at their ‘cool, see you later’ handshake, then headed with him to find her classes.
